What this tool does
Removes silent stretches from an audio file, with a detection sensitivity and a minimum silence duration you set.
When to use it
- A speech recording with long pauses between sentences.
- A podcast episode you want tightened by removing the gaps.
- Raw footage you want cleaned up before editing.
- An interview with long thinking pauses.
How to use it
- Put an audio file on the drop area or choose it.
- Set the "Silence detection sensitivity".
- Set the "Minimum silence duration counted as a gap" so natural short pauses are not removed.
- Click "Remove silent sections", then download the file.
A practical example
Input
A 40-minute recording with frequent pauses, with a one-second minimum silence.
Output
A shorter file with every silence over a second removed and the speech running continuously.
Limitations
- Setting the minimum silence too low removes the natural pauses between sentences, making the speech feel uncomfortably rushed.
- A recording with loud background noise may have no detectable silence, because the noise fills the gaps.
- Cuts happen where the silence is, not where an editor would choose.
Privacy and processing
The audio is analysed and the gaps cut on your device; nothing is uploaded.
Technical notes
- Detection compares the level against a threshold set by the sensitivity, and a section must also exceed the minimum duration before it counts as a gap to remove.
