JSON Formatter

Paste in JSON to format it with proper indentation, validate its syntax, and catch errors before you use it — all processed locally in your browser, with nothing sent to a server.

Developer Tools Runs entirely in your browser

Text is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to a server.

Result

The result will appear here after clicking "Format JSON" or "Minify JSON"

What this tool does

Formats JSON with clear indentation, minifies it to a single line, or validates it. The result can be viewed three ways: as text, as a collapsible tree, or as a table.

When to use it

  • An API response arrived minified onto one unreadable line.
  • You are hunting a structural error in a JSON file and cannot see where it is.
  • You want JSON compacted before putting it somewhere space-constrained.
  • You are exploring an unfamiliar data structure and want to see its shape.

How to use it

  1. Paste your JSON into the "Input JSON" field.
  2. Click "Format JSON" to read it, "Minify JSON" for one line, or "Validate JSON" to check it only.
  3. Switch between the "Text", "Tree" and "Table" views as suits you.
  4. Copy the result, or press "Clear" to start again.

A practical example

Input

An API response minified onto a single line thousands of characters long.

Output

The same data indented and readable, with a tree view whose branches you can collapse to reach what you care about.

Limitations

  • This handles standard JSON; text containing comments or trailing commas is not valid JSON — run it through the JSON Auto Repair tool first.
  • The table view suits arrays of uniform objects and becomes less useful with deeply nested structures.
  • Very large documents can slow the page down, since everything is processed in the browser.

Privacy and processing

The text is processed entirely on your device and is never sent to a server — which matters in practice, because API responses routinely contain access tokens and customer data.

Technical notes

  • Parsing uses the browser's built-in JSON parser, so what this tool accepts is what any JSON-handling system accepts.
