XML to JSON Converter

Parses an XML document's structure (elements, attributes, text) and converts it into equivalent JSON, and back again — supporting attributes (an "@_" prefix) and repeated elements as arrays. DOCTYPE and ENTITY declarations are rejected outright for security (preventing XXE attacks), without using a general-purpose XML parser that could attempt to load external resources.

What this tool does

Converts between XML and JSON in both directions, so data can move between a system that speaks XML and one that expects JSON.

When to use it

  • A legacy API returns XML and your code works in JSON.
  • An XML file whose structure you want to inspect in a more readable form.
  • Preparing JSON data for a system that accepts only XML.

How to use it

  1. Choose the "Conversion direction": "XML to JSON" or "JSON to XML".
  2. Paste your text into the field.
  3. Click "Convert" and copy the result.

A practical example

Input

<user><name>Ahmad</name></user> converting XML to JSON.

Output

A JSON object with a user key containing a name key whose value is Ahmad.

Limitations

  • The two formats are not structurally equivalent: XML distinguishes attributes from elements and JSON has no such distinction, so a round trip may not reproduce the original file exactly.
  • XML comments and processing instructions are not carried across.
  • XML namespaces are flattened, so key names can differ from what you expect.
  • An element that happens to appear once cannot be distinguished from a single value, so you may get a scalar where you expected an array.

Privacy and processing

Both the XML and the JSON stay on your device; neither is sent to any server.

Technical notes

  • Parsing uses the browser's built-in XML parser, so what it accepts is what the browser itself accepts.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — they're rejected outright for security reasons (preventing XXE attacks) rather than silently ignored, so you're never misled into thinking they were processed.
