What this tool does
Converts a worksheet from an Excel workbook into a plain CSV file that any program or script can read.
When to use it
- A system or script that accepts CSV only and cannot read Excel files.
- You want a lightweight text format that can be diffed in a code repository.
- Moving data into a database that imports CSV.
How to use it
- Put the Excel file on the drop area or choose it.
- Pick the worksheet if the workbook has more than one.
- Click "Convert to CSV and download file".
A practical example
Input
An .xlsx workbook with a sales sheet of four columns.
Output
A CSV with the same rows, one line per row and values separated by commas.
Limitations
- CSV carries values only: formulas appear as their results, and formatting, colours, charts and images are not carried over.
- One worksheet per output file, because CSV has no concept of multiple sheets.
- Full support for .xlsx, with only basic support for the older .xls.
- Dates can appear as numbers depending on how the workbook stored them.
Privacy and processing
The file is processed on your device and is never uploaded to our servers.
Technical notes
- The workbook is read with SheetJS, the same library behind the other spreadsheet tools here.
