PDF to Markdown

Analyzes font size and spacing inside the PDF to infer headings, lists, and paragraphs, then produces ready-to-use Markdown for writing tools or AI/LLM workflows. Works best on clearly formatted documents, and relies on the PDF's actual text layer (not OCR).

PDF Tools Runs entirely in your browser

Your file is processed on your device and is never uploaded to our servers.

Headings and lists are inferred from font size and spacing in the file, not real document structure — it works best on clearly formatted documents, and may need light manual cleanup for complex layouts.

What this tool does

Converts a PDF's content to Markdown, inferring headings, lists and paragraphs from font sizes and vertical spacing on the page.

When to use it

  • You are moving a document's content into a site, blog or documentation system that uses Markdown.
  • You want structured, diffable text in a code repository rather than a binary file.
  • You are preparing a document's content for a tool that works on formatted text.

How to use it

  1. Put a PDF on the drop area or choose it.
  2. Wait for the conversion to finish.
  3. Copy the result or download it as a Markdown file.

A practical example

Input

A 10-page user guide with graded heading sizes and numbered lists.

Output

Markdown with graded # heading levels, lists in list syntax, and body text as plain paragraphs.

Limitations

  • The inference is approximate: a PDF stores positioned glyphs, not document structure, so headings come from font size and spacing rather than any explicit tag.
  • Documents with inconsistent visual hierarchy degrade gracefully to plain paragraphs rather than producing confidently wrong structure.
  • Tables, images and equations are not carried across as equivalent Markdown constructs.
  • It does not work on scanned documents, which have no text layer.

Privacy and processing

The conversion happens inside your browser; neither the file nor its text is sent to any server.

Technical notes

  • Grouping glyphs into lines and classifying those lines into headings, lists and paragraphs are pure functions covered by unit tests.
  • The same logic is reused by the PDF to Word and PDF to EPUB tools, so all three read document structure consistently.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — they're inferred from font size and spacing in the file rather than real document structure, so complex or inconsistently formatted files may need a bit of manual cleanup.
