Redact a PDF (Hide Sensitive Info)
Upload a PDF and draw black boxes over any text or sensitive information you want to hide before sharing the file. On export, every page is permanently flattened into an image — this guarantees no hidden text layer survives behind the black boxes that could be copied or extracted later, unlike tools that merely draw a box over text without actually removing it from the file. Everything happens in your browser, with nothing ever uploaded to a server.

What this tool does
Genuinely removes sensitive information from a PDF. You draw black boxes over what you want hidden, and on export every page is flattened into an image — so no hidden text survives behind the boxes to be extracted later.
When to use it
- You are sharing a document containing identity numbers, addresses or financial details that must be hidden.
- You are handing a document to someone who is not entitled to see parts of it.
- You are publishing a document that contains names or signatures that must be obscured.
How to use it
- Put a PDF on the drop area or choose it.
- Page through the document; the position shows as "Page X of Y".
- Draw a rectangle over anything you want to hide. Click an existing box to remove it.
- Repeat on every page that needs it; each page shows how many redacted areas it has.
- Export to download the redacted copy.
A practical example
Input
A 3-page bank statement with two boxes drawn over the account number and the address on page 1.
Output
A 3-page file where the redacted details are covered in black and their text cannot be extracted by any tool — because the pages are now images.
Limitations
- Every page is converted to an image on export, not only the redacted ones. That is the price of genuine redaction, and the consequence is that the whole document's text stops being selectable or searchable.
- The resulting file is usually larger than the original, because each page is now an image rather than text.
- Check the result before sharing and confirm everything that needed hiding is actually covered — the tool applies what you draw and does not go looking for sensitive data on your behalf.
Privacy and processing
The document is processed entirely on your device and is never uploaded — which matters most here precisely because a file that needs redacting is, by its nature, the kind that should never be sent to an outside service.
Technical notes
- On export each page is re-rendered at a higher resolution than the on-screen preview, the black boxes are painted onto that image, and the image is placed into a new PDF at the original page's exact size.
- This is the real difference from tools that simply draw a black rectangle over text: there, the text remains underneath the box and can be copied or extracted trivially.
