What this tool does
Counts a text's lines: the total, the non-empty ones and the empty ones, along with the total character count.
When to use it
- A data file whose record count you want.
- Source code whose lines you want counted.
- A list whose completeness you are checking.
- Text with a maximum number of lines.
How to use it
- Paste the text or code into the field.
- Read the four figures, which update immediately.
A practical example
Input
A list file with blank lines scattered through it.
Output
The total lines, how many carry content, how many are empty, and the total characters.
Limitations
- A final line with no trailing line break still counts as a line, which is the usual expectation but can differ from other tools.
- A line containing only spaces may count as non-empty depending on its contents.
- This counts and does not analyse the lines' content.
Privacy and processing
The counting runs on your device and neither your text nor your code is sent anywhere.
Technical notes
- Separating empty from non-empty lines is particularly useful with data files, where the record count matters rather than the line count.
