Face-Aware Smart Auto-Crop

The Smart Auto-Crop tool automatically detects a face in your image using a small (under 1 MB) machine-learning model that runs entirely in your browser, then crops the image to your chosen ratio (square, portrait post, wide cover, or story) while keeping the face inside the frame with sensible headroom above it — instead of a plain center-crop that might cut off the head or place the face awkwardly. If no face is found, it falls back to the most visually detailed region of the image rather than a blind center-crop. All processing — from face detection to the final crop — happens in your browser; the image is never uploaded to a server.

Image Tools Runs entirely in your browser

Your image is processed entirely in your browser; it is never uploaded to a server.

This tool automatically detects a face in your image (using a small machine-learning model that runs in your browser) and crops around it so the face stays in frame — instead of a plain center-crop that might cut off the head or leave too much empty space. If no face is found, it falls back to the most visually detailed region of the image rather than a blind center-crop.

What this tool does

Crops an image automatically to an aspect ratio you choose, positioning the crop around the face it detects rather than blindly around the centre. Face detection runs inside your browser.

When to use it

  • You are converting portraits to a specific ratio without cutting heads off.
  • You are producing profile pictures from wider shots.
  • You are cropping group photos so the faces stay inside the frame.

How to use it

  1. Put the image on the drop area or choose it.
  2. Choose the "Crop ratio" you need.
  3. Run the auto crop; the tool tells you whether a face was found.
  4. Download the cropped image.

A practical example

Input

A landscape photo of someone standing to the right of frame, with a square crop ratio.

Output

A square image centred on the face rather than on the middle of the photo, with more room above the head than below the chin as portraits conventionally have.

Limitations

  • If no face is found the tool says so explicitly rather than claiming a smart crop it did not make.
  • Faces in sharp profile, very small, or partly obscured may not be detected.
  • With several faces it computes a rectangle covering all of them, which may not be what you want if one particular face matters.
  • Images above 20 MB, or longer than 4096 pixels on a side, are refused before detection runs.

Privacy and processing

Face detection and cropping both happen entirely inside your browser; the image is never uploaded and no data about detected faces is sent anywhere.

Technical notes

  • The detector is UltraFace in its slim variant, about 1 MB and MIT licensed, self-hosted on this site.
  • Turning the detected face boxes into a crop rectangle is pure, unit-tested geometry, which is what places the face at roughly half the crop's height with more room above the head than below the chin.

Frequently Asked Questions
