Qibla Direction Finder
Enter a location (or use your device's coordinates) to calculate the exact Qibla direction and bearing toward the Kaaba in Mecca — computed using great-circle geometry, with a visual compass for orientation.
The calculation happens entirely on your device — your coordinates are never sent to a server.
The direction is the straight-line geodesic bearing to the Kaaba, measured from true geographic north. To actually orient yourself, use a compass (your phone's compass app) and line it up with the angle shown here.
What this tool does
Calculates the qibla direction from your location as a bearing from north, along with the distance to Mecca, from your coordinates or from browser location detection.
When to use it
- Travelling and needing the direction somewhere new.
- Checking a direction you know by another means.
- Establishing the direction in a building with no marking.
How to use it
- Use the location button, or enter latitude and longitude by hand.
- Run the calculation.
- Read the bearing from north and the distance.
A practical example
Input
The coordinates of a particular city.
Output
The qibla bearing in degrees from north, and the distance in kilometres to Mecca.
Limitations
- The bearing is from true geographic north, while a phone's compass and a magnetic compass point to magnetic north — and in some regions the two differ by many degrees. Account for that if you use a compass.
- Accuracy follows the accuracy of your coordinates; location detection indoors is less precise.
- This gives a bearing and does not display a compass that follows your device's movement.
Privacy and processing
The calculation happens entirely on your device and your coordinates are never sent to a server.
Technical notes
- The bearing uses the initial-bearing formula on a spherical surface between your position and the coordinates of the Kaaba, which is the standard method.
