What this tool does
Calculates the break-even point: how many units must be sold to cover fixed and variable costs, and the revenue at that point.
When to use it
- Assessing a venture's viability before launching it.
- Determining the sales volume needed to cover your costs.
- Comparing what lowering fixed costs or raising the price does to the break-even point.
How to use it
- Enter the "Fixed costs".
- Enter the "Variable cost per unit" and the "Selling price per unit".
- Click "Calculate break-even point" and read the units and revenue.
A practical example
Input
Fixed costs of 10,000, a variable cost of 30 per unit and a selling price of 50.
Output
A break-even point of 500 units at a revenue of 25,000 — because each unit contributes 20 towards the fixed costs.
Limitations
- This is for information only and is not financial advice.
- The selling price must exceed the variable cost per unit, or there is no break-even point however much you sell.
- It assumes a constant price and cost for every unit; volume discounts and stepped costs change the picture.
- It ignores time: the break-even point is a number of units, not a date.
Privacy and processing
Your cost structure and pricing are computed on your device and never sent to a server.
Technical notes
- The calculation divides fixed costs by the per-unit contribution margin, which is the selling price minus the variable cost.
