What this tool does
Calculates return on investment: the profit and what percentage of the cost it represents, from an investment cost and a total return.
When to use it
- Measuring the outcome of a marketing campaign or a small project.
- Comparing two options by their results.
- Working out the profit percentage on a completed deal.
How to use it
- Enter the "Investment cost".
- Enter the "Total return".
- Read the "Profit" and the "Return on investment (ROI)".
A practical example
Input
A cost of 10,000 and a total return of 13,000.
Output
A profit of 3,000 and a return on investment of 30%.
Limitations
- This is for information only and is not investment advice.
- The percentage ignores time: 30% over one year is fundamentally different from 30% over five, and comparing them without the period is misleading.
- It excludes indirect costs, the value of your own time, and inflation.
Privacy and processing
The cost and return you enter are computed on your device and never transmitted.
Technical notes
- The percentage is computed against the original cost rather than the total return, which is the standard definition of ROI.
