What this tool does
Counts how often each word occurs in a text with its count and percentage, with options to ignore punctuation and letter case.
When to use it
- An article whose dominant vocabulary you want to see.
- Analysing responses or comments for recurring themes.
- Reviewing text for excessive repetition of a word.
- Studying a text or a speech analytically.
How to use it
- Paste the text into the field.
- Enable "Ignore punctuation" and "Ignore letter case" as suits you.
- Read the table: the word, its count and its percentage.
A practical example
Input
A long article with punctuation and case ignored.
Output
A table of words ordered by frequency with each one's count and its share of the total.
Limitations
- Common function words usually top the list without indicating anything about the subject.
- It counts words as they appear and does not group a word's forms: singular and plural count as two different words.
- To analyse phrases rather than single words, use the Keyword Density Checker, which lets you set a phrase length.
Privacy and processing
The counting happens on your device and your text is never uploaded.
Technical notes
- The ignore-punctuation option matters in practice: without it, a word and the same word followed by a comma count as two.
