What this tool does
Works out what you need to save monthly to reach a financial goal within a set period, allowing for what you have already saved and an optional expected return.
When to use it
- Saving for a deposit, a trip or a large purchase by a particular date.
- Checking whether your goal is realistic in the time you have set.
- Comparing what extending the period does to the monthly amount.
How to use it
- Enter the "Target amount" and "Current amount".
- Enter the "Term (years)", and an "Expected annual return %" if the money will be invested.
- Click "Calculate required contribution".
A practical example
Input
A target with an amount already saved and a three-year term.
Output
The monthly amount you need to put aside to reach the goal in that time.
Limitations
- This is for information only and is not financial advice.
- An expected return is an assumption rather than a promise; actual returns may be lower, higher, or negative.
- It excludes inflation, so your goal's purchasing power in a few years may differ.
- The target and term must be greater than zero.
Privacy and processing
Your target, your current savings and the term stay on your device.
Technical notes
- When an expected return is entered, its effect on money already saved is accounted for, which lowers the monthly amount needed compared with saving at no return.
